PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team needed nearly all of the 100 points they scored Tuesday to give coach Lindsey Wilson her first win.
Senior post Precious Herrin poured in a career-high 34 points and Clovis’ Tori Northcutt added 12 points and 10 rebounds as ENMU beat Oklahoma Panhandle State 100-96 in a non-conference game.
Herron shot 16-of-22 from the field and added nine rebounds for the Zias (1-1).
“I was open and my teammates found me,” said Herron. “It was tough but we played hard.”
The difference in the game would prove to be Eastern’s ability to convert fast-break opportunities into easy layups — the Zias finished with 42 fast-break points.
Meanwhile, after converting on four their first nine 3-point attempts, the Aggies went cold. OPSU shot 27 percent from the floor.
“I have to give Eastern a lot of credit,” OPSU coach Brad Boogard said. “We threw a lot at them tonight. (Precious Herrin) is a heck of a player. She’ll be one of the best in the Lone Star Conference.”
Teenie Kent led OPSU (0-2) with 23 points. Sophomore Camille Washington added 18.
Senior Hannah Altheide added 14 points for the Zias (1-1).
The Aggies took 33-23 lead with nine minutes left in the first half with the help of back-to-back 3-pointers from the top of the key by senior Briana Gonzalez.
After a turnover plagued start, ENMU’s offense started clicking. Reavis Best’s fast break layup sparked an 8-0 run as the Zias surged to a 50-45 lead at the break.
The Zias pushed their lead to 10 early in the second half on drive by senior Hannah Altheide.
The Aggies wouldn’t go away, cutting the deficit to one on Teenie Kent 3-pointer from the right wing with three minutes remaining, but that would be as close as they’d get. Eastern answered with a 6-0 run to hold on for the win.
“It wasn’t pretty, but we found a way to win,” Wilson said.
The last time the Zias scored 100 points was a 101-58 win against Cameron University in 1993.
