The deadline for girls 5 to 10 years old to enter the 2011 Little Miss Merry Christmas Contest is Nov. 15. Contestants must attend an information meeting at the Chamber of Commerce at 6 p.m. that day.
The Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce is also calling for entries from businesses, individuals and organizations for the Lighted Christmas Parade.
As a part of Portales’ yearly holiday tradition, the Little Miss Merry Christmas Contest raises money for the white Christmas lights that are on display throughout town and on the courthouse. The contest runs from Nov. 15 through 5 p.m. Dec. 7, with an official pre-parade coronation ceremony taking place at the historic Yam Theatre 6 p.m. Dec. 8.
The Christmas Jubilee and Lighted Christmas Parade will be 6:30 p.m. Dec. 9, starting at the Portales Recreation Center and ending downtown.
The contestant who raises the most money through donations collected by her sponsor and through additional fundraising efforts will be crowned Little Miss Merry Christmas with all runners-up receiving the title of Princess.
Photos of the contestants will be taken for use by the Portales News-Tribune. Previous winners of the Little Miss Merry Christmas are ineligible to re-enter the contest.
There is no entry fee for the Portales’ Christmas Jubilee parade but registration is required.
Entry forms and information for the Little Miss Merry Christmas Contest and the Lighted Christmas Parade can be picked up at the chamber or call 356-8541 and the forms will be e-mailed or faxed.
