NMHSCE re-takes offered
The New Mexico High School Competency Exam (NMHSCE) will be administered Jan. 18-21 to former PHS students from graduating classes 2006 to 2011, who completed all credits but failed one or more portions of the graduation test. Students and parents who have any questions may visit the guidance office or call 356-7015. If you are planning to take the exam, the PHS Counseling Office must be notified by Nov. 17.
ASVAB testing scheduled
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) will be administered to the Portales High School junior class on Nov. 10. The exam will take all morning but will conclude before lunch. Students taking the ASVAB are in no way obligated to enlist in the United States Armed Services and may use their results to assist in the planning of future educational opportunities.
PHS/Gear-Up College Fair scheduled
The Portales High School Class of 2012 and The New Mexico Gear-Up Grant will host a college fair from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Portales High School on Nov. 16. in the Ram Athletic Center. You are invited to attend with your son/daughter or come at a time that is convenient for you. Our goal is to provide students with the opportunity to learn more about colleges, the military and career opportunities. Various colleges, military branches and some future employers will be present at Portales High School (RAC) and to PHS students. The Gear Up grant that follows the 2012 Graduation Class will be used to fund this event. The college and career fair meets one of the major objectives for the educational grant.
FAFSA pin night scheduled
PHS and NM Gear-Up will host a FAFSA Pin Night and College Connection Night for the graduating class of 2012. Students and parents will be able to set up a pin number in preparation for completing the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) as well as learning more about the Financial Aid process. All interested seniors may sign up with Mr. Matthews in the Attendance Office. There will be two separate presentations: One from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. and one from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 in the PHS District Computer Lab. Space is limited to 30 students for each session. Pizza and drinks will be provided for those who attend.
