WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State scored off a free kick in overtime on Sunday, and the Mustangs posted a 1-0 Lone Star Conference women’s soccer victory over Eastern New Mexico University in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Mustangs (11-5-2, 9-4-1 LSC) avenged a loss to the Zias (8-7-3, 6-5-3) earlier this season in Portales. ENMU is the third seed in the six-team LSC tournament this week at Abilene, Texas, and will face No. 6 West Texas A&M at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
With a win over the Lady Buffs, ENMU would face MSU again in the semifinals at 11 a.m. on Friday.
In Sunday’s match-up, the Mustangs had a 26-4 edge in overall shots, but only a 7-3 margin in shots on goal.
The only score came when Midwestern’s Maddie Fraser chipped a free kick over the ENMU wall and Lindsay Pritchard won a race to the ball with Zias goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas, poking it into the net for her sixth goal of the season.
