Miranda Byrd had 16 kills and seven total blocks (three solos) Tuesday night as Midwestern State notched a 25-27, 25-11, 25-21, 25-19 Lone Star Conference volleyball victory over Eastern New Mexico University at Greyhound Arena.
Eastern was paced by junior outside hitter Amber Durand, who registered 12 kills and seven digs. Senior middle blocker Jessica King led the team in kills with 14 while freshman setter Kennedi Catano had 41 assists.
ENMU (5-18, 1-13 LSC) took a back-and-forth first set as junior outside hitter Evelyn Escobar collected eight kills, but untimely defensive and service errors plagued the Zias in their effort to build upon the momentum gained from the strong Game 1 performance.
After losing the second and third sets, the Zias battled back from a 19-12 deficit in the fourth set to make a game it. However, a kill from MSU’s Caitlin Wallace on match point put the comeback to rest.
Wallace and Hillary White each added 11 kills for MSU (13-9, 5-8). White recorded a double-double with 15 digs.
Zias coach Mike Maguire said his team struggled after the first set.
“There’s not a lot of teams in the Lone Star you can beat playing like that,” ENMU coach Mike Maguire.
ENMU returns to action on Thursday in a 7 p.m. LSC matchup against Tarleton State at Greyhound Arena.
