Eastern New Mexico University’s basketball teams kick off preseason practice today, each going two sessions at Greyhound Arena.
The women have workouts scheduled at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., while the men will go at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
ENMU is planning a form of “Midnight Madness” for next week, after a Zias home volleyball match against Tarleton State. Third-year men’s coach Andrew Helton said the event would start around 9:30 p.m. and include a men’s dunking contest and a men vs. women’s 3-point shooting contest.
The Greyhounds (13-14 last season) begin the season with six returning players, four newcomers and six walkons. The Zias (5-21), under first-year coach Lindsey Wilson, have six returnees on their 12-player roster.
The Hounds have exhibition games on tap Nov. 2 at New Mexico State and the following night at Texas-El Paso. They open the regular season on Nov. 11 against Pittsburg State in Tarleton State’s South Central Challenge at Stephenville, Texas.
The Zias, who will scrimmage New Mexico Junior College and Wayland Baptist at home on Oct. 22, play their season opener on Nov. 12 against Fort Lewis at Greyhound Arena.
