TEMPE, Ariz. — Eastern New Mexico University junior Daniel Draper earned a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II track championship in javelin in Arizona State’s Sun Devil Open on Saturday, placing second in the event with a throw of 199 feet, 4 inches.

ENMU sophomore Bill Squire, meantime, improved on his NCAA qualifying mark in the hammer, throwing 184-8 to finish first. The Greyhounds and Zias also set several school records in the meet.

Squire won shot put competition with a school-record effort of 52 feet, with junior Jonathan Bull third at 50-11. Also, Squire (167-2) and Bull (138-5) went 2-3 in discus competition, while freshman Anthony Anderson was eighth in javelin at 160-11.

Placers on the track for the Hounds were junior Brian Smith, eighth in the 100 in 10.09 seconds; senior J.T. Thompson, fifth in the 400 at 48.92; freshman Dustin Francke, fourth in the 800 at 1:55.93; freshman Jacob Lozano, fourth in the 3,000 in 8:51.17, and senior Richard Kogo, fifth in the 3,000 in 8:58.84.

For the Zias, sophomore Nicole Reid set school records in placing eighth in the 3,000 steeplechase (11:47.86) and 10th in the 800 (2:25.24). Sophomore Kassie Daugherty was fifth in discus (123-0) and seventh in shot put (34-6 1/4).

ENMU squads return to action on Saturday in the Oliver Jackson Open, hosted by Abilene Christian.
