The first 42 tournament for Portales happens Friday at the Roosevelt Electric Cooperative.
Organizers say anyone who loves the challenge of 42 is encouraged to enter.
Eight games with a 20-minute time limit are scheduled.
Jerry Whitney organized the one-day event along with Jimmy Roberts.
Whitney is a member of the National 42 Players Association and says he has been a serious 42 player for most of his life.
“If this tournament goes well, we will do an even bigger one next year, he said. “I hope interest will grow in Portales.”
“There are two players per team,” said Whitney.
Whitney joined the National 42 Players Association in 2008. At that time there were no leagues in the state.
There is a league in Clovis with 50 teams called the Curry Co. 42 League.
“Right now, Portales has 10 players,” Whitney said.
Roswell has an active 42 league which plays every week. The Alien Country 42 Championship is scheduled for July 9-10.
Whitney has won the state championship title 3 times.
Roberts has worked closely with Whitney on organizing this 42 event in Portales.
“There will be first, second, and third place certificates awarded ... and there will be cash prizes,” explained Roberts. “It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or a skilled player — everyone who wants to play is welcome,” he said.
“People really enjoy 42 — we’ve got people coming from Amarillo. We’ve already got at least 15-20 teams interested in participating.
“Everyone is invited. If you don’t have a partner, just come on down and we will find one for you,” said Roberts.
