April 5, 1945: Sgt. Joseph W. Copeland of Causey had been awarded a Silver Star for voluntarily subjecting himself to a concentration of German artillery fire, The Portales Daily News reported. Copeland was wounded in the leg, the story reported, during construction of a road block.
