The Clovis-Portales Highway, now U.S. 70, was the statewide subject of much controversy when candidate for Lt. Gov. Jack Dillon accused candidate for governor Jack Campbell of promising "the sun, moon and stars, and a galaxy of assorted highway projects," which included expanding the local highway.
