Salvidore Larez, 3, and Marcello Vega, 11, get their jack-o-lanterns ready for Halloween Monday afternoon. Ghosts and goblins of all sizes will hit the streets tonight for trick-or-treating.
As night falls and trick-or-treaters begin to make the rounds, area officials are cautioning the public to keep an extra eye out for them.
Extra patrols of law enforcement officers will be out during the evening, especially in higher traffic areas, said Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry.
“They (drivers) need to be more observant because the children are not going to be,” Berry said.
When choosing a costume, make sure it fits the child well and that they are able to see clearly when wearing it, Berry said.
Berry cautioned that while out trick-or-treating, you should only visit well lit areas and those that you are familiar with. Children should be accompanied by someone who can help watch for traffic, Berry said.
“We want to make this safe for everyone; for the kids, the parents and the homes they go to,” Berry said.
Parents should also check candy to make sure that it has not been tampered with in any way. Things that are unwrapped should be immediately thrown out. With a variety of candy available today, it will not be a big loss to throw a few pieces out, Berry said.
“We want parents to take a look at all the candy that is collected,’ Berry said.
City Manager Debi Lee is encouraging children to trick-or-treat between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., she said.
“Be careful, be safe and everybody watch out for each other. Watch out for the little guys and have a safe time trick or treating,” Lee said.
