DORA — The Dora Lady Coyotes won the final two games against Floyd Thursday night, beating the Lady Broncos 3-2, and earning a district tournament first-round home game next week. Floyd took two of the first three games, but the Dora girls fought back, winning the match 19-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 15-9. “They played well. They didn’t quit, which was a good thing for us because that was the hump that we had to get over this year,” first-year Dora coach Malaqui Webster said. “I’ve got some young girls who did a good job of stepping up and finishing it off for us tonight. They wanted it.” Dora’s victory is their second straight district win. The Lady Coyotes also upset Elida Oct. 15. “They get in their little group and they talk to each other and they just convince themselves that they want it more than the other team,” Webster said. In her first year as head volleyball coach, Webster pointed out the area in which she believes her girls have improved the most. “Mentally more than anything,” Webster said. “There for a while, we were down and they would quit, but here anymore, they fight until they are just totally exhausted.” As the district No. 5 seed, Floyd will get another shot against the Lady Coyotes Tuesday night in the opening round of the district tournament. “(This is) huge for Dora,” Webster said. “From my understanding, they haven’t hosted (a tournament game) in quite a few years, so it’s huge.” Webster also knows the Dora gym is a tough place for opponents. “It’s a pretty loud gym,” Webster said. The winner of the district tournament opener will travel to Melrose in the district quarterfinals. The district’s No. 2 seed, Elida will host the district semifinals, and the top-seeded Fort Sumner Vixens will host the district championship game. W-L W-L Fort Sumner 7-1 17-4 Elida 5-3 15-5 Dora 3-5 11-9 Melrose 3-5 9-10 Floyd 2-6 8-8 Thursday’s matches Fort Sumner 3, Melrose 0 Dora 3, Floyd 2.
