Floyd, Dora girls knocked out of district tournament

Floyd’s season is over, but coach Cody May is pleased with his squad for all the progress they’ve made.
In the District 3-1A tournament, Schuyler Cochran scored 23 to help Melrose down Floyd 56-39.
Darcy Chenault lead Floyd with 17 points, Kelli Johnson chipped in 12.
“We’ve had a pretty good season,” May said. “They were 8-16 last year, so it’s good to improve on that.”
This was May’s first season with the Broncos (13-13).
“I didn’t think we played as well as we should have in district,” May said. “But we didn’t have a lot of talent. We only had two girls who could really score.”
Kimberly Lyons scored 12 to lead the Lady Buffs.
Fort Sumner dominates Dora
The Fort Sumner Vixens jumped out to a huge lead and cruised to a 69-29 win that ended a disappointing season for the Lady Coyotes.
Fort Sumner led 23-6 after one quarter and 43-16 at the half.
Alex Owens paced the Vixens with 15 followed by Kaylynn Johnson with 12.
Fort Sumner (13-11) has battled injuries this season, Julie Wood is the only player to start every game, but Fort Sumner appears to be healthy and playing well now.
“We’ve got Amber (Sena) and Laurel (Harrera) playing three fourths of the game instead of three or four minutes,” Fort Sumner coach Brian Fortner said. “And Kaylynn Johnson has been playing great for us. She’s averaged about 10 points per game in district. She’s a big part of why we’re playing well.”
Dora finishes at 1-26. Rana Terry scored 20 in the losing effort.
