KINGSVILLE, Texas — Texas A&M-Kingsville took the lead for good with a 10-0 run midway through the first half Thursday night and the Javelinas went on to rout Eastern New Mexico University 91-76 in a Lone Star Conference South Division men’s basketball matchup. Senior guard Remi Yusuf scored 17 of his game-high 28 points in the first half, leading five players in double figures for the Javelinas (14-8, 4-3 South). Yusuf finished the night 9-for-11 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. Kingsville tightened its grip on third place in the division, shooting 56 percent from the field while avenging a 63-60 loss at Eastern last week. The Greyhounds (9-14, 3-5) managed three early leads and three ties before a basket by Bobby Pandy put Kingsville in front for good with 13 1/2 minutes to go in the half. That started the run that ended with a jumper by reserve Wendell Mulkey, making it 19-9 with 10:53 left. By halftime, the Javs held a 43-26 cushion. They extended the margin to 26 points with 13 minutes left, and the Hounds were unable to get any closer than 13 after that. Pandy finished with 17 points for the Javs, while guard Ricky Huckaby added 11 points and forward Kia Griffin and Mulkey finished with 10 apiece. Freshman guard Joshua Jackson went 5-for-7 from the field and led ENMU with 14 points. Senior guard Tristan Largent, junior post Mikal Monette and freshman forward Jake Holladay all contributed 10 points. The Hounds shot 53 percent in the first half, but managed only 19 attempts from the floor and were hurt by 12 turnovers. They finished the night with 21 turnovers, more than enough to negate 54 percent shooting from the field. The Javs dominated just about every category. They had a 16-4 edge for the game in fast-break points, a 56-24 advantage on points in the paint and a 31-16 margin in points off turnovers.
