Freedom Newspapers KINGSVILLE, Texas — Senior forward Kaipresha Price’s layup with 1:23 left Thursday night lifted Texas A&M-Kingsville past Eastern New Mexico University 60-58 in a Lone Star Conference South Division women’s matchup. Freshman guard Jasmine June scored 21 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as the Javelinas (5-17, 1-8 South) snapped a six-game losing streak and pulled into a last-place tie in the eight-team division with the Zias (9-14, 1-8). ENMU beat Kingsville 71-62 last week at Greyhound Arena. Kingsville scored the game’s first seven points and led virtually all the way, stretching a 35-23 halftime lead to 15 points on three occasions early in the second half. Senior post Tiana Bryant helped lead the Zias back, scoring 11 of her team-high 14 points after intermission. The Zias chipped away slowly, closing to 51-48 with nine minutes remaining after a 3-pointer by Bryant and two free throws by junior guard Megan Ratliff. Senior guard Latasha Davis answered by nailing the Javelinas’ only 3-pointer in nine attempts, but a basket and two free throws by Bryant and a jumper by junior guard Missy Kirkland pulled the Zias even for the first time with 5:10 to go. ENMU came up empty on two chances for the lead, and June’s layup on an assist by Price put the Javs back in front. Kingsville’s Angela Trotter, fouled on her own follow shot, added two free throws for a four-point lead with 2:34 to go. Baskets by guards Heather Brown and Lindsey Wood tied it with 1:46 to go, but Price’s basket gave Kingsville the lead for good on its next possession. After a turnover, Wood rebounded Aasia Betts’ missed 3-point try for Kingsville with 16 seconds left. The Zias called a timeout and eventually got the ball to Kirkland, whose 3-pointer for the win in the final seconds was off the mark. Trotter added 12 points for the Javs while Brown, who played the entire 40 minutes, was the Zias’ only other double-figure scorer with 13 points.
