Salas to be tried as adult
Published: Friday, September 23rd, 2005
Ninth Judicial District Attorney Matthew Chandler told Orlando Salas, 15, Friday he would be tried as an adult in connection with last week’s killing of a 10-year-old Clovis boy.
Chandler told Salas during his first appearance in district court that if the Clovis teen is convicted of murder, he will serve his sentence in adult prison, Chandler said.
Salas is being held in the Curry County Juvenile Detention Facility and will remain there until the conclusion of court proceedings, Chandler said.
Amendments to the 1974 Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act allows the prosecution to try juveniles as adults for some violent crime and weapons violations.
Salas is one of three brothers charged with murder in the case. Edward Salas, 21, and Demetrio Salas, 19, are being held at the Curry County Adult Detention Center.
Noe Torres, 26, is also charged with murder in the case but remains at large.
Carlos Perez was shot in the head Sept. 15 while he slept in his bed died later that day.
Chandler said he is taking the case to the grand jury Oct. 6.
