Conference discusses Patriot Act The Department of Communicative Arts and Sciences and the Department of Political Science at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales are teaming up to present a “First Amendment Conference,” Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. in the Becky Sharp Auditorium in the College of Business Building. It is titled “What is the Price of Freedom? Balancing Civil Liberties and First Amendment Rights.” Speakers and topics include: “USA Patriot Act: Balancing Protection” by Christopher Stasheff; “Security and Democracy in an Age of Terrorism” by Daniel Acheson-Brown; “The Role of Free Press in This Time of Crisis” by Patti Dobson; and “Free Speech in an Era of Turmoil” by Margaret Kirby. Benefit dinner coming Saturday There is a benefit dinner for Hurricane Katrina victims 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Jake Lopez Building on the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds. Entertainment includes Spritual Journey, Los Padres, the Matthew 6:33 Academy, Steve Davis, Penas, David Dawson and Melissa Lamb. Donations needed include water, cleaning items, toiletries, batteries, flashlights, bibles and money. The dinner is sponsored by Master Works, Janet Fields and Matthew 6:33 Academy.
