Portales joins High Plains Yard Sale

Portales community leaders decided they will combine efforts with various Clovis organizations to raise money for the victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster through the High Plains Yard Sale. The High Plains Yard Sale will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the Curry County Fairgrounds. Dan Williams, a health educator for the New Mexico Department of Health, said the Clovis people wanted to extend an invitation to Portales people to contribute items to the yard sale and raise money for the Hurricane Katrina victims. “A group of folks got together and it increased to 18 different entities,” Williams said. “They wanted to see what they could come up with. They wanted to consolidate their goals with the rest of the people in eastern New Mexico.” Williams said it is easier to send money instead of items because of the price of fuel to transport items. According to Williams, the group decided on a yard sale. “It will give everyone in the area a way to be able to donate to the community yard sale,” Williams said. Williams met with Sharon King, director of the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce, Charlene Hardin, Roosevelt County administrator, Jeremy Sturm, director of economic development for the City of Portales, Rusty Galloway of United Way of Eastern New Mexico and Portales Rotary Club member and other organization leaders. The decision was to join efforts and donate items to the High Plains Yard Sale. People interested in donating items can take them to the Curry County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 24 and Sept. 30. King said one of her concerns was that some Portales residents would not be able to transport their items to Clovis. The committee members decided to have a drop-off spot in the pavilion at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds for Portales residents. The drop-off times and dates 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 24 and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 25. The Portales group met on Tuesday at the chamber of commerce and decided to have contact phone numbers for Portales members, also. The Portales group needs volunteers to help sort the items and the group is looking for people to donate use of trailer-trucks or other means of transporting items to the Clovis sale. All proceeds will go to Katrina Relief Fund. Williams said there will be entertainment for the children and snow cones. According to Williams, some non-profit organizations are having problems with not enough space for all of the items. People interested in donating can call, King at 356-8541, Galloway at 356-4481, Milz Bickley at 675-2353 and Terry Teti at 226-6456.
