Hank Merrick Mr. Hank Merrick, 68, of Causey, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, in Causey. He was born on March 13, 1936, in Horse Springs, to Thelma and Robert C. Merrick. In 1954, near Magazine, Ariz., he graduated from high school and later returned to Causey. On Mar. 4, 1958, in Portales, he married Marcelle Garner. In 1961, he purchased the Causey Cotton Gin, which they operated until 1979. They also owned Merrick Fertilizer for several years and in 1984 they established Merrick Hardware. Family members said he was very civic-minded. He was among the first members of the Causey Fire Department in 1959 and served as chief for 39 years. He had been an emergency medical technician since 1983, and received the Cardiac Save Award. He was the Moulage Artist for Region III EMS, a member of the New Mexico National Disaster Team that served in the Virgin Islands after Hurricane Hugo, a Causey city councilman for numerous years, and had recently been appointed mayor. He served on the Causey and Dora school boards for 18 years. Since 1994, he was a deputy medical examiner in Roosevelt County. Family members said he was proud of his role in developing the Causey Memorial Park. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Kirchoff; and a daughter, Ramona Parkinson. Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Merrick of Camedenton, Mo.; two daughters, Peggy Burnett (and husband, Sam) of Morton, Texas, and Wanda Newberry (Corky) of Elida; seven grandchildren, Paula Moore (Nathan), Clinton Burnett, Marshall, Tyrel and Daniel Merrick, James Newberry and Mary Beth Williams (Heath); a great-grandchild, Berlyn Merrick; a brother, Guy Merrick of Portales; two sisters, Roberta Payne of Portales and Erlene Wallace of Havana, Ariz. Services were held Dec. 29 at Guy Luscombe Gymnasium in Dora at 2:30 p.m. Larry Skelley and Scott Reeves, assisted by various family members, will officiate the services. Burial was at Causey Cemetery. Pallbearers were Eldon Merrick, Kenneth Cox, Willard Heck, Larry Skelley, Mike Chavez and Kris King. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
