Elida FFA chapter housed the 2004 Greenhand Quiz and FFA Creed Speaking contests. The contest took place Oct. 18 at Elida High School. Forty-four contestants from 11 neighboring schools participated. The judges were Tommy Thompson, San Jon; Arkie Kiehne, Portales; Mike O’Connor, ENMU; Jesus Trujillo, Hagerman; Glen Trammel, Dexter; and Kelly Jones, Goddard. The students in the Creed speaking contest were divided into two groups, with the top five from each group moving on to the final round. The contestants were required to say the FFA Creed in front of a panel of judges and answer questions pertaining to the Creed. Ten contestants were chosen to face off in order to determine this year’s champion Creed speaker. The top ten qualifiers were: Lauren Graham, Melrose; Jolynne Corley, Floyd; Carissa Sinoff, Floyd; Tom Sullivan, Elida; Ryan Best, Elida; Kevin Estes, Melrose; Jarea Eshleman, Melrose; Daniel Shuler, Texico; Wesley Gilmore, Elida; and Brooke Reed, Floyd. The students taking the Greenhand Quiz were given a written examination over the FFA manual. Melrose and Grady had the top teams in the contest. The top contestants and teams in these contests will represent District 4 at the State Contest in June. The Fellowship Of Christian Athletes held a meeting on Oct. 20. Connie Dixon was the guest speaker. Dixon told the group that it’s OK to follow people to a point, but then you should follow your heart and God. October 25th through the 28th is Drug Awareness Week. The elementary will celebrate with several activities encouraging students to “vote to be drug free”. Each student will receive a bracelet to wear all week plus pencils, stickers, red ribbons, and Suckers. Thursday will be a K-12 balloon send-off to finalize the week’s activities.
