Richardson to visit tonight
Published: Tuesday, October 19th, 2004
Gov. Bill Richardson will visit Portales today to discuss legislative priorities with the public at 6 p.m. at Buchanan Hall, located in the music building on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University.
The visit is part of a message about education, according to Gilbert Gallegos, a spokesman for Richardson. The visit is open to the public.
“The governor’s going to travel throughout New Mexico,” Gallegos said, “but he particularly wanted to announce his plan to improve our state’s higher education system and to build on improvements to our public schools.”
Gallegos said the governor would also talk about adequate yearly progress (AYP) under the No Child Left Behind Act.
“The governor’s pursuing a plan to intensively train teachers to work in these schools,” Gallegos said. “Rather than just punishing the schools (for not meeting AYP), the governor wants to reach out and help those schools improve.”
Lt. Gov. Diane Denish will be coming through Portales on Thursday as part of a three-county tour. Gallegos said the timing of visits was coincidental.
