CANYON, Texas — Anna Bellum had 22 kills and Kelley McGinty added 18 kills and 21 digs Tuesday night, lifting Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team past West Texas A&M 30-23, 38-40, 30-20, 25-30, 15-9 in a Lone Star Conference South Division matchup. The win was the first for the Zias over WT since October 1995, ending a 23-match losing streak against the rival Lady Buffs. Eastern (16-5, 1-2 South) trailed 20-18 in the first game before roaring back for 11 consecutive points with senior Jessica Weeks on the service line. WT (15-10, 0-3) then evened the match in a long second game before ENMU moved back in front. After WT rallied back to tie the match, the Zias took control with three consecutive points in Game 5 for an 11-7 lead. They ended the 2 1/2-hour contest when the Lady Buffs were called for a lift on match point on an attack by junior Lindsay Schiely. Senior setter Margie Goble had two kills and a block in the final game for ENMU. Schiely and senior Emilie Rodman each contributed 16 kills for Eastern, while Weeks had a match-high 33 kills. Cynthia Carter led four Lady Buffs in double figures in kills with 20. Cross country — Junior Patrick McGuire and freshman Jason Garcia led a strong Eastern New Mexico showing as the Greyhounds took the men’s team title in the ASU Blue and Gold Classic cross county meet Tuesday at San Angelo, Texas. Four ENMU runners finished in the top 10 as the Hounds totaled 45 points to edge South Plains College by six points and host Angelo State by seven. Tarleton State was fourth with 98 points, and UT-Permian Basin finished fifth with 118. The ENMU women placed fourth in a seven-team field with 99 points. ASU won with 35, followed by South Plains with 68 and West Texas A&M with 92. McGuire was fifth out of 33 runners, clocking a time of 28 minutes, 11 seconds over the five-mile course. Garcia finished two seconds behind him while junior Orlando Sanchez was eighth in 28:26 and sophomore Ricardo Hernandez, who had missed the past two meets with pneumonia and returned to practice only Monday, placed 10th in 28;31. “I was really excited to the guys run like that,” ENMU coach Joel McMullen said. “For Ricardo to run as strong as he did was impressive. “It was a pretty fast pack, but our guys tried to run together and that’s why they finished where they did (as a team).” ENMU’s women all placed between 17th and 26th in a field of 39 runners, led by junior Lynnae Chavez with a time of 22:10 over five kilometers. Senior Karissa Huskey had her top performance of the year, finishing 18th in 22:19. ENMU’s next outing will be in the Lone Star Conference meet on Oct. 23 at Durant, Okla.
