WT whitewashes Hounds in soccer

CANYON, Texas — Junior forward Josh Fender netted his first hat trick of the season and junior midfielder Omar Morales added three assists as West Texas A&M blanked Eastern New Mexico University 7-0 Tuesday night in a soggy Southwest Soccer Conference men’s soccer match at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. Senior midfielder Jason Connell added two goals and an assist for the Buffaloes (7-3-0, 5-2-0 SSC), including the first goal of the night with just over seven minutes gone when he deflected a free kick by teammate Kenneth Christensen past ENMU goalkeeper Leif Craddock. Fender added two goals in the final 17 minutes of the half, and the Buffs continued to pull away from the first-year Greyhounds (4-6-1, 2-5-0) in the second stanza. The shutout was the sixth suffered by ENMU this season, including three in its last four matches. Senior Andy Young and backup Shawn Wilder combined for three saves in goal for WT. Meantime, the Buffs converted seven of their 15 shots against Craddock and backup Grant Shanahan.
