The Floyd Broncos changed the outlook on the six-man football rankings on Saturday, blowing out No. 3 Mountainair 66-20 on the road. Senior Chance Chenault caught two touchdown passes from Jerrod Long, threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jason Martinez, and returned a kickoff for a touchdown in a surprisingly easy win for the Broncos (1-0). Floyd coach Jeff Gillespie said the Broncos won handily because they had no turnovers and few penalties. Floyd jumped out to a 24-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The game ended with about three minutes to go via the 45-point mercy rule. “To come in and not turn the ball over is pretty good,” Gillespie said. “I told the kids I’m not satisfied very often. Today I’m satisfied.” In addition to his touchdown passes, Long also had four rushing touchdowns for the Broncos. Floyd heads to Sanderson, Texas, on Friday. Kickoff time is set for 6:30 p.m. (MDT). Volleyball Floyd earned its first win, beating visiting San Jon on Friday 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21. Floyd coach Sean Wootton said the victory over San Jon gave his team a bit of confidence before District 3-1A play begins. The Lady Coyotes (1-1) defeated Floyd’s 3-1A rival Dora on Thursday. “We didn’t play well in the first match,” Wootton said, noting that the Lady Broncos (1-1) were up 22-21 with the serve and let the game get away. “They came back and showed a lot of pride in the last three matches to beat San Jon.” Floyd has two matches scheduled for this week — Tuesday against Texico and Thursday at House.
