ROSWELL — Roswell Goddard swept Portales in a tennis dual on Tuesday, winning the girls matchup 7-2 and taking a 9-0 win on the boys side.

Despite the loss, Lady Rams coach Sara Meeks said her team competed well.

“We played up a level,” Meeks said. “We wanted to be aggressive, and for the most part we did that today.”

The Lady Rams won at No. 6 singles, with Stefania Gutierrez rallying past Goddard’s Whitney Bates to win in a super-tiebreaker 5-7, 6-4, (11-9). The other win came at No. 3 doubles, with Sabrina Montoya and Emily Walker notching a 6-3, 6-4 win.

Meantime, at No. 4 single, Megan Combs took the Lady Rockets’ Catherine Zelkowski to a third set before losing 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

On the boys side, the Rams were without some of their key people due to a band commitment, coach Brian Kirchner said.

“We had to play some guys who don’t have much (varsity) experience,” Kirchner said. “Goddard’s a tough team even if you have your full team.”

The Rockets won each match in straight sets except for No. 3 doubles, where the Rams’ Mychael Sturm and David Harberts dropped a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 decision. Meantime, Jesse Hooper at No. 4 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Hooper and Brandon Carter lost a set after forcing it to a tiebreaker.

Portales returns to District 4-3A action on Thursday at Lovington.
