ALBUQUERQUE — Dora guards Kyler Smith and Jeremy Butler combined for 35 points, and the South All-Stars rallied from a 23-point second-half deficit to claim a 98-93 victory in the Class 1A-2A North-South All-Star Game Thursday night at Eldorado High School.
The South pulled a sweep on the night, with a 124-117 win in the 4A-5A game that followed. Arthur Calbert of Clovis had nine points in the victory.
Smith hit five of his six shots from beyond the arc for a game-high 21, and Butler added 14 as the South recovered from a 61-38 deficit with 18:04 left in the second half.
Butler’s only 3-pointer of the game tied matters at 76 with 7:35 to go, and he added five points later in the half to hold off the North — which had five in double figures, led by Russ Kemps (Rehoboth) with 17 points.
Berry Stinnett of Fort Sumner scored six, while Brett Anderson of Texico added two for the South.
Calbert said the experience was a nice way to end a high school career. The 6-foot-4 post is going to New Mexico State to major in electrical engineering and doesn’t plan to play sports.
“It was just fun overall,” Calbert said. “It wasn’t (a situation where) if I lost, I would have hated the experience.”
Calbert's Clovis teammate Jaye Crockett was also selected for in the 4A-5A game, but withdrew because he is taken summer courses at Texas Tech University, where he committed to play basketball in the 2009-10 season.
The South was coached by Artesia’s Ike Montoya, a Portales native.
