HOBBS — The Hobbs Lady Eagles clinched the District 4-5A girls soccer championship on Friday with a 5-0 win over Clovis High in the regular-season finale for both teams. Hobbs got two goals from Natalie Martinez and one each from Andrea Luzano, Cassie Edwards and Caitlin Gray. The Lady Eagles (13-6, 3-1 district) led 5-0 at halftime. Clovis (6-13, 0-4) was outshot for the match 16-1. Senior goalkeeper Celsey Eldridge made five saves for the Lady Wildcats. Second-year CHS coach Shane Leatherwood acknowledged that, while the Lady Cats had some bright moments this season, he had hoped for more wins. “We improved early, and then I think we kind of got content,” Leatherwood said. “Once we realized we weren’t where we needed to be, it was too hard for us to catch up.” Leatherwood said he’s hopeful that, with seven of 11 starters scheduled to return, the Lady Cats can improve their overall standing in 2008.
