CARLSBAD —Senior forward Kevin Barnhart scored one goal and assisted on another, helping Carlsbad rally in the second half for a 2-1 victory over Clovis High on Tuesday in District 4-5A boys soccer.
The Wildcats (5-12, 0-2 district), coming off a 10-0 shellacking at Hobbs on Saturday, took a 1-0 lead when senior Luis Esparza scored in the 38th minute, scoring over Carlsbad goalkeeper Jamin Daly from about 20 yards out.
Barnhart got an assist in setting up sophomore midfielder Santiago Chavez for the tying goal about 10 minutes into the second half. The Cavenmen (10-6, 1-1) then took the lead when Barnhart dribbled in and beat CHS keeper Robbie Pinder 1-on-1 about 10 minutes later.
“We played well,” Clovis coach Shaun Gill said. “We fought hard. Unfortunately, Kevin Barnhart got loose for the winning goal.
“The guys showed a lot of heart and character. It was a good rebound from the loss to Hobbs.”
Carlsbad won the junior varsity preliminary 4-0.
