Dixie Guylene Hammit
Services: 10 a.m. Monday at Portales Cemetery.
Dixie Guylene Hammit, 71, of Midland, Texas, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, in Midland, Texas.
She was born March 19, 1934, in Arch, to Alma and Guy Sanders.
She graduated from Portales High School in 1952. She married Truman Hammit on Jan. 1, 1954. She was employed for a number of years at the American Soil Conservation Service Office in Portales. She and her husband also owned and operated several grocery stores in Portales and Clovis, including Hometown Food. After they retired from the stores, she worked at ETC Shoe Store and later at the Merle Norman store.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was also active in the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary.
In July of 2004, she moved to Midland to be closer to her son and family.
Family members said she enjoyed playing with her grandchildren, gardening and watching the Dallas Cowboys.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Truman, who died May 18, 2002.
She is survived by a son Kevin Hammit (and wife, Christene) of Midland, Texas; two grandchildren, Brian Hammit and Katherine Hammit, both of Midland; two brothers, Darryl Sanders of Tucson, Ariz., and Derry Sanders of Houston; and two sisters, Doris Barbee of Springdale, Ariz., and Patsy Losson of Sevierville, Tenn.
Scott P. Reeves will officiate graveside services.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
Ray Lee “House” Walker
Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Steed-Todd Chapel.
Ray Lee “House” Walker, 58, of Portales, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
He was born May 22, 1947, in Gilmer, Texas, to Robert Jr. Walker and Mary Louise Walker.
He was preceded in death by his father; two sisters, Dorothy Louise Walker and Barbara Ann Walker; and a son, Eddie Johnson.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Louise Walker of Clovis; eight brothers, Robert and James Walker, both of Clovis, Jimmy Walker of Amarillo, Larry Walker of Alaska, Charles Walker of Salt Lake City, Utah, Freddie Walker of Friona, R.M. Walker of Colorado and Jerry Walker of Hereford; three sisters, Glenda Walker of Clovis, Brenda Sanders of Lubbock and Dee Ross of Arlington, Texas; six sons, Virgil Walker of Colorado, Merrill Walker of Austin, Texas, Gaylon Walker of Fort Worth, Texas, and Mitchell, Anthony and Ken Walker, all of Lubbock; a daughter, Trina Walker of Austin, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Virgil, R.M., Jerry and James Walker, Phrod Sanders and Richard Ross.
Honorary pallbearers will be Philip Sanders, Dewayne Young, and Clarence Sanders.
Pastor Maurice Monson will officiate.
Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home.
