Alexander wins hospital board race
Comments 0Obstetrician/gynecologist Lonnie Alexander has defeated cardiac rehabilitation nurse Bill Rice in the Roosevelt General Hospital board election.
Alexander had 56.8 percent, or 660 votes, and Rice received 501 votes, or 43.2 percent.
Election results are not official until the New Mexico Secretary of State confirms them on Friday.
“I’m pleased with the outcome, and I will be happy to serve on the board and intend to work hard to secure the hospital’s future,” Alexander said.
Alexander added that Rice is a good man who has the hospital’s best interests at heart.
Alexander believes that through his 20-plus years practicing in Portales, “most people have come to know where my loyalties and interests lie.”
The doctor said his immediate priority is to help recruit more doctors. As for obstetrics service, Alexander said it isn’t feasible in Portales due to financial constraints.
“If we ever grow to a point where that becomes a reality, of course I would support it,” he said.
Rice plans to continue working at the hospital, and said he has to respect what voters want.
“I wish Dr. Alexander all the best of luck on serving on the board and that the hospital continues to grow and continues to meet the needs of the county,” Rice said.
