Roosevelt County men fined for poaching

Two men were fined and one sentenced to jail after pleading guilty Oct. 21 to poaching charges.

Jacob Gaines, 21, of Roosevelt County was sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $2,255 for poaching a deer and antelope.

Wade Richardson, 23, of Portales pleaded guilty to unlawful killing of an antelope and was fined $467.

Gaines was originally charged with 31 counts of poaching-related crimes, Parker said.

He pleaded guilty on two counts of unlawful killing of a deer, two counts of unlawful possession of a deer and one count of unlawful possession of antelope.

Gaines also faces possible civil damages from the state of $16,250.

Richardson pleaded guilty to taking a buck antelope when he had a license for a female or immature antelope, Parker said.

Richardson also faces possible civil damages from the state of $4,000.
