Job: Master barber at Herb’s Barbershop
Background: I grew up in Texico and moved to the Floyd in 1997.
Time on job: I have been in the field for 24 years. I have spent the last 13 years here at Herb’s.
What does your job entail? I just cut hair. I don’t color or perm. It’s just an old fashion haircut. Matter-of-fact, I still use a straight razor to clean up around the ears and the back of the neck.
What is a typical day like for you? We are a walk-in only shop, so it’s just whenever someone needs a haircut. We don’t even have a phone.
Why did you choose this job? It actually chose me. I am the only female to ever cut hair in this shop. I am presently the only female here.
What type of training, if any, is needed for this job? You have to go through cosmetology school. I was required by the state of New Mexico to have 1,200 hours of school to become a master barber.
What do you enjoy most about your job? The stories. I hear some really good stories. Also, I love the people. One of my past customers lived to be 107 years old. Oh did I hear some stories from him
