No seats change hands in school board elections

Two incumbent Elida school board members retained their seats during Tuesday’s countywide school board elections.

Virginia Ann Clemons took 89.3 percent of the votes in her race for Position 4, beating challenger Manuel Jasso. In the other contested race, 83.5 percent of voters favored Scott Burton for Position 5.

Garland Creighton ran uncontested.

Portales, Dora and Floyd all had uncontested races.

Floyd voters passed a property tax increase of $2 for each $1,000 of net taxable by a 44 to 2 count.

Clemons said she is grateful for the support and she looks forward to serving the community and the school.

“I’m very interested in our students and school and improving everything we can about it,” Clemons said. “I am looking forward to working with our teachers and helping them any way we can.”

Burton feels it is an honor to be on the school board and to be able to help the children.

“I think we’re going to try to keep doing what we are doing,” Burton said. “What we have been doing has been working, and I think we are going to try to make the education for the children better. It just depends on how much money we are going to get from the state. Right now, it looks like we’re not going to get much.”

The other districts had smaller voter turnouts than Elida, which saw 114 voters.

Floyd had 47 voters, Portales had four voters and Dora had six.
