Local retailers in Clovis and Portales have increased sales events to attract customers this Black Friday.
Burns Do It Center in Clovis will have its first Black Friday sale since reopening at a new location last March.
The store is holding a giveaway on Black Friday. A shopper’s name will be drawn and the recipient will receive a $1,000 shopping spree at Burns Do It Center.
“We’re trying to attract people who possibly haven’t been in the store since it changed in March,” said Assistant Store Manager Adam Warren, “and let people shop and see the layout and see a lot of the things we’ve changed in the last several months.”
The store is holding sales on merchandise such as kitchen and Christmas items. Warren said some merchandise will be marked down 60 to 70 percent. Also, the store will open at 7 a.m. on Friday, an hour earlier than normal.
Warren advised shoppers to check store advertisements to decide what items to purchase before hitting the store Friday.
“If you can walk into our store and tell somebody I’m looking for this slowcooker or this turkey fryer, our people can take you right to it and save you a lot of time,” Warren said.
In Portales, Creighton’s Town and Country is featuring select merchandise on sale at up to 75 percent off to attract Black Friday shoppers.
Leslie Creighton, co-owner, expects the store’s buy-two-get-one-free sales on clothing to interest shoppers.
Creighton hopes the 25 to 30-second advertising spots she ran on the radio each week for several weeks will also bring in more customers.
The store will keep a receipt from each purchase and enter receipts into a drawing for a $200 prize package. The drawing will be held at closing time.
Also, store hours will be extended from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
“We like to encourage people to shop locally at our small businesses. We have things here to offer just like the big cities do and it’s important to shop local.”
Jesus Tovaro, store manager of Ashley Furniture Store in Portales, said his staff has sent advertisements directly to residents through the mail.
Tovaro said he increased the store discount by 5 percent from last year to give customers 25 percent off from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday. He said other discounts will vary through the day.
“Everyone goes to Walmart to shop on Black Friday,” Tovaro said. “We know we can’t compete with Walmart because it carries more product, but we want people to know about the Ashley brand here (in Portales).”
