ENMU hosts choir camp

High school students from across the state spent the past week on the Eastern New Mexico University campus participating in the school’s annual choir camp.

Not only does the camp help to prepare students for the upcoming All-State auditions, it is also instrumental in helping the students improve their skills in areas such as sight-reading and ear training. During the camp students also learn solo vocal repertoire and perform in a great mass choir, said Jason Paulk, director of choral activities at ENMU.

“This large choir is the highlight for most of the students,” Paulk said.

Portales High School student Lauren Main is attending the choir camp for the third year. Main, who will be a senior in the fall, is a member of the PHS Choral.

“They teach you a lot about techniques in general,” Main said.

Students attending the camp are able to participate in private and group voice lessons, master classes and conducting classes. The students may also participate in a talent show and recreational activities, Paulk said.

Lessons learned at the camp instill focus, creativity and discipline, he said.

“The skills they learn by participating in choirs will transfer to every aspect of their lives in the future, whether they continue singing or not,” Paulk said.

Clovis High School student Dimas Natividad said attending the camp has instilled more confidence in him and improved his leadership skills, he said.

“Music is something that I love. To have people that love doing the same thing in the same place, is just very special,” Natividad said.
