Turkey dinner runs today

The Elida United Methodist Church is holding its annual turkey dinner from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. today in the Elida school cafeteria.

Cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children 12 and younger.

Silent auction ongoing

Portales senior volunteer programs will hold their annual silent auction Tuesday through Nov. 18 at Portales National Bank.

Proceeds benefit senior volunteer programs.

Church holds garage sale

The Floyd Baptist Church will hold a garage sale from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and from 7 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Memorial Building in Portales to benefit Lance Fletcher, the 8-year-old Dora student who is undergoing cancer treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Donations and volunteers from individuals, organizations and churches is welcome.

Pep hosts craft fair

A craft fair will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Pep Community Center.

The event will feature all handmade crafts.

Booths are available for $20.

Honor event Saturday

An event to honor God, country and veterans will be held at 7:40 a.m. Saturday at Southside Church of Christ, 221 W. 18th St.

Guest speaker will be Capt. Bryan Cottrell, chaplain at Cannon Air Force Base. Also featured will be the American Legion Honor Guard, special music and prayer leaders from several churches.

The event is free and open to the public.

Program features playas

A program on playa lakes and the unique and important role they play in the eco-system will be presented at the next meeting of the Friends of the Portales Public Library at noon Thursday in the meeting room at the library.

Thousands of playa lakes dot the Great Plains states of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico, including dozens in Roosevelt County. Joe Whitehead, area resource conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, will talk about how playas function, some of the threats they face, and what can be done to help protect them.

In addition, the Friends will spend some time planning the upcoming used book sale, which is scheduled for Nov. 13-15.

The meeting, which is a brown bag lunch, is open to the public.
