June 30 ENMU Briefs

La Escalera works displayed

The Runnels Gallery in Golden Library at Eastern New Mexico University is displaying works from La Escalera, the Portales Art Guild, until August 13. Each member of  La Escalera is displaying up to two pieces of art until the close of the show.

Albert Calderon, Runnels Gallery manager, sought out La Escalera to fill the empty gallery space for the summer. “With all the events going on for the 75th anniversary, we didn’t want to close the gallery so I asked them if they wanted to display their work here,” says Calderon.

“It’s a very eclectic mix of pieces,” he added. “They’re traditional, but there are a lot of different types of pieces like architecture, landscape pieces, mixed media and all sorts of different works.”

The name La Escalera, translates from Spanish to “the ladder,” was chosen by the Portales Art Guild because it is seen as achieving higher goals. The group meets from September to May, once a month, and will hold its first meeting Monday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Golden Acres Community Room.

For more information regarding the Runnels Gallery contact Calderon at 575-562-2607. For information regarding La Escalera contact Marcea Clive at 575-356-5244.
