Instructor cancels driver safety

The driver safety program at the Community Services Center scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday has been canceled because the instructor, George Lees, is handling family medical concerns. People who have enrolled or want to enroll can join the Clovis class held on the same days.

Food bank plans collection

The Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico has scheduled its Holiday Canned Food Drive in Portales for Saturday.

Donors can place canned or nonperishable food on their curbs starting at 9 a.m., and volunteers are to pick up the items. The drive ends at 2 p.m.

La Dean Jameson, who does inventory invoicing for the food bank, said the donations are really needed for the holidays.

“The demand is getting greater and greater,” she said.

If volunteers miss donations during the drive, people can call 693-0090 or 693-0161.

Health Department offers flu shots

The local Health Department is offering free flu shots for people of all ages on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Portales Senior Citizens Center, 421 N. Industrial Drive, on Wednesday.

Nurse to speak on public health emergenices

The local chapter of AARP is scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the board room of the Community Services Center, 1100 Community Way.

New Mexico Public Health Nurse for Roosevelt County is set to present a program on local preparedness for public health emergencies and the history of flu pandemics.

All interested members of the community are invited.

Retirees to learn about African bees

Roosevelt County Association of Education Retirees will meet at 11:30 a.m. in the cafeteria conference room at Roosevelt General Hospital on Friday. Roosevelt County Cooperative Extension agent Patrick Kircher will bring the program on African bees.

After the program, the new officers for 2009 will be installed. The officers include President Glen Howl, Vice President Faye Keener, Secretary Rosalie Patrick and Treasurer Faye Dunn.
