Why Elida?

At least three stories have been told about how a tiny southwest Roosevelt County community came to be called Elida.

The Place Names of New Mexico‚ reports the three possibilities:

• A settler named John Gee in 1902 may have combined his daughters names, Ella and Ida‚ into one.

• Gee found a stake in the ground with the name ‚ Elida‚ on it and adopted the name for the settlement.

• A construction engineer named the place for his hometown, Elida in Allen County, Ohio.
