Steven Cathey of Portales walked across Eastern New Mexico University’s Greyhound Arena stage Saturday and into the next chapter of his life.
Cathey, a digital film arts major, is a movie and music enthusiast. His time at ENMU uncovered his love for recording sound.
Like many recent graduates, Cathey is pondering what he plans to do next with his life.
The million dollar question, what do you plan to do now that you’ve graduated?
My main thing right off the bat was that I was tired. I need time to relax so I can get things figured out. I plan to get a job while I work on my portfolio and grad school applications. Hopefully I’ll be going to grad school for sound or film and then move to a big city to pursue my career. I want to do fun stuff and get paid for it and work my way up the ladder. I hope to work with some of my friends because some of my friends are in the same field.
When you were a child and were asked what you wanted to be when you grow up, what was your answer?
My first answer was an acrobat. My second would be a herpetologist, someone who studies reptiles. I love snakes and lizards. My third thing would be an artist
Are you surprised how much it has changed now?
Yes and no. I think it just makes sense that it would change throughout your life. Somewhere deep down inside, I think it would be awesome to be an acrobat. As you mature you become more realistic in your ideas.
What is your best memory at ENMU?
My first semester sticks out because I met so many new friends. I haven’t had many friends in my entire life. I met all these people at one time and they knew each other and we became this big group of awesome friends. We’d hang out at Eddy Hall and just hop to different rooms and have movie marathons. I will always look fondly on that.
What was your final GPA?
I finished with a 3.967. I got the gold card, I was one of 11 people.
If you could go on one trip anywhere in the world to celebrate graduation, where would you visit and why?
I’ve always had like an enamor with Machu Picchu, Peru For some reason if I can go anywhere, I just want to check it out because it looks so cool.
Who was your biggest supporter when college got tough?
It’s kind of like a mixture. Obviously my parents are a big support because they helped me out financially. But I guess emotionally it would be my girlfriend. When I have a breakdown, she’s usually right there.
What was your pantry staple when you were hard on cash as a college student?
Quesadillas, I definitely made a lot of quesedillas.
What do you appreciate most about ENMU?
Maybe just like the chances it gave me to do stuff that might have been harder for me to get to do at a big school. Just like the fact I got to play guitar in the jazz band, and I get to be in the steel band. It might have been harder at a big school.
As a movie lover, name the three films that changed your life and define you?
- “The Matrix”
- “The Godfather”
- “Wayne’s World”
What’s your ultimate career goal?
Just to have been successful doing what I want to do which is pretty much working on sound and video on a great film.
