Rogers man accused of attacking officer

A Roosevelt County farmer incarcerated at the Dona Ana County Jail is accused of stabbing a detention officer Tuesday.

Authorities are investigating the attack that prompted a three-hour lockdown at the southern New Mexico jail.

The officer, Johnny Barrientos, had opened the door to Donald Taylor’s cell to deliver a food tray when Barrientos allegedly was attacked with what county spokesman Jess Williams described as a “crudely fashioned shank.”

Taylor, of Rogers, is accused of collaborating with the Aryan Brotherhood in the 2005 shooting death of Causey rancher Jimmy “Bo” Chunn.

Taylor is facing federal charges that include murder, conspiracy to commit murder, being a felon in possession of a weapon and ammunition, and conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.

Williams said Taylor, 27, likely will face additional charges related to Tuesday’s attack.

Taylor is a member of the Aryan Brotherhood gang and lists his religious affiliation as “satanic,” Williams said. He is being held without bond in the maximum-security portion of the jail.

Barrientos was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
