Famed 4-Hers
Roosevelt County residents Gene Marshall and Jewel Maxine Wilhoit were inducted into the New Mexico 4-H Hall of Fame in July at New Mexico State University.
Marshall served as leader of the Hustlers 4-H Club from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s in Portales. She mentored children of farm families and those with families otherwise connected with agriculture.
Wilhoit joined 4-H when she was 9 years old.
As an adult, she became a leader before her own children were old enough to join and continued to be involved with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Today in history
On this day in 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, died in Paris' Pitie-Salpetiere Hospital after suffering massive chest injuries in an early morning car accident.
Her companion, Dodi Fayed, was killed instantly in the 12:25 a.m. crash, as was driver Henri
Paul, who was drunk and lost control of the Mercedes in a highway underpass.
