Generous people all over the world come together to battle a terrible disease by actively participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. In some cases, the participants are quite young and often go the extra mile in the fight against cancer.
For example, the Relay For Life of Portales was organized by Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) from Portales High School, Yucca Junior High and Texico High School, supported by Debbie Stenstrom, Amy Garcia and Kye Thomas.
The Relay For Life of Melrose was organized by the Melrose High School FCCLA led by Cheryl Hinrichs.
Both Relay events raised much-needed dollars for the research, education and patient services programs of the American Cancer Society.
An inaugural “Striking Out Cancer Together” doubleheader softball game between Clovis Wildcats and Hobbs girls softball teams raised $2,000 and focused attention on breast cancer. Coaches Brandi Thomas and Dean Crossland hope to continue the game-for-charity tradition in years to come.
Venture Crew 411, a co-ed scouting group of 14- to 17-year-old volunteers, served dinners, scrubbed dishes and mopped floors for the Clovis F.O.E. to raise over $2,000 for their Relay team.
These fine young people (and many more like them) deserve our gratitude for their enthusiasm and leadership qualities in the race to find a cure for cancer.

Blood donations appreciated
A big thank you to all of the citizens of Portales who donated blood in April. United Blood Services was able to collect 20 units of blood. That is an outstanding accomplishment.
We are able to provide life-saving transfusion to our area patients because of the giving nature of our donors. Thanks to everyone who is a part of our life-saving mission.

Political letter deadline set
The Portales News-Tribunel will stop accepting letters related to the June 3 election on May 27. Any letters received after that will not be published. Letters on new issues will not be published after May 25.
