Tucumcari athletes work on fast drills, skills at camp

A football camp at Tucumcari Schools gave new head football coach Daniel Hutchins a chance to size up prospective Rattlers.

It also gave the 64 boys who signed up for the camp the same opportunity.

Monday’s camp seemed to have a slow ease to it.

One of the attendees said,” He jokes a lot.”

“He’s trying to get us to be better,” said another.

On Tuesday drills not satisfactorially executed saw a least one boy hustling down Rattler field to the goalpost and back from about 30 yard line.
“They’re doing good,” Hutchins said on Tuesday.

Hutchins called on players to be versatile and flexible. He also said he would be looking for backup quarterbacks.

Hutchins told the boys that they were expeceted to the do the right thing, and that would be to practice.

He compared it to McDonald’s advertising. Just like the fastfood retailer’s repetitve message, doing the right thing means to continued practice.
Assistant coach Brian Dunlap followed up saying that while other teams would be working their on Xs and 0s, the Rattlers would be working to encourage their team to do the right thing and become young men who also do the right thing.

“If you’re going to be a success in life, in school, or on the football filed, you’ll do the right thing,” Dunlap said.

Meanwhile in San Jon, Ceil Boatman of Clovis was holding a volleyball camp at the San Jon Schools gyms. With assistant Valerie Roberts, the two coaches were leading volleyball players from San Jon, Tucumcari, Logan and House schools through a volleyball jump-start camp.
