Comments 0 | Recommend 0Anaya, Merritt, Wimberly to be on 12-player contingent
Three members of the Clovis High softball team will participate in a tour of Germany where they will play several games over the course of about a week.
Shortstop Nicole Anaya, catcher Kayla Merritt and second baseman Elena Wimberly will join nine girls from Albuquerque and Las Cruces, all entering their senior years in high school. The trip is sponsored by America’s Team International.
Sandia coaches Tracy VunKannon and Sarah Carter are coaching the team, and contacted CHS coach Brandi Thomas to see if any of her players would be interested. Anaya, Merritt and Wimberly spent about a month raising money for the trip, said Anaya’s father, Ronnie.
The players will gather Saturday in Albuquerque to practice for several days. The team flies out of Albuquerque next Wednesday, arriving in Frankfurt, Germany the following day.
The team has games scheduled on Aug. 1 in Frankfurt, Aug. 3 in Munich and Aug. 5 in Deggendorf. The players will be involved in sight-seeing activities between games.
They fly back to Washington, D.C., on Aug. 7 and return to Albuquerque later that day.
