The Tucumcari Rattlers and Logan Longhorns moved to 3-0 on the season with strong Friday-night performances.

"We came out on fire," said Rattlers head coach Daniel Hutchins.

On the road, the Rattlers' defense intercepted a pass for a touchdown and forced a safety in a 27-0 win over the West Las Vegas Dons. Logan crushed Gateway Christian, 30-12.

Rattlers quarterback Alex Hutchins found wideout Jakus Martinez twice for touchdown passes and Martinez also returned an interception for a touchdown.

"I read the quarterback's eyes, stepped up into the pass and took it to the house," Martinez said. "Alex threw two great passes and the line had some great blocks."

One of those touchdowns came after two penalties erased two 60-plus-yard touchdown runs by George Montano.

The Rattlers' defense stopped the Dons offense cold even with the clock winding down in the game. The Dons intercepted a pass with 1:30 left in the game. There last offensive drive ended with a turnover on downs.

Back in Quay County, the Logan Longhorns practiced smash-mouth football beating the Gateway Christian Warriors.

"The offense kept pounding the ball, wearing down their defense," said Longhorns coach Billy Burns.

Longhorns senior Truitt Frost had two interceptions and sophomore Tanner Sorrels had one interception.

"This is how we play," Frost said. "We pound the ball and play hard football."

Senior Blake Strack dominated on the ground, scoring the first two touchdowns in the first half and two more in the second half.

"We are going to keep pushing as hard as we can go," Strack said.

The Longhorns defense limited the Warriors to one touchdowns in each half.

The Rattlers' next game is homecoming at 7 p.m. Friday against the Capitan Tigers.

The Longhorns next game is at 7 p.m. Friday at Bataan Military Academy.
