Quay County teams off to slow starts

Week in review: Tucumcari lost 79-44, to Springer on Saturday in its season opener. Logan lost its opening game 66-57, to Springer on Friday night. House/Grady went 0-3 with losses to Adrian, Floyd and Farwell. San Jon beat Corona, Maxwell and Vaughn at the Vaughn Tournament over the weekend.

Stars: Logan’s Brandon Rafool had 20 points in the Longhorns’ loss to Springer. ... Tucumcari’s Zack Murray had 18 points and Jake Martinez had 11 points in the Rattlers’ loss.

Just sayin’: “We made a run, then they would make a run and after awhile we just couldn’t catch up,” Logan coach Billy Burns said.

• “Dumb fouls really hurt us,” Logan senior Truitt Frost said.

• “We ran into a really solid team on Saturday,” Tucumcari coach John Span said.

Need to improve: The Rattlers shot 26 percent in their loss to Springer.

Where it stands: San Jon 3-0, Tucumcari is 0-1, Logan is 0-1, House/Grady is 0-3.

Up next: All four teams are off the rest of the week for Thanksgiving break.
