Rush scores hat trick in Zias' 7-1 win
HOBBS — Senior midfielder Calie Rush of Clovis scored the fourth hat trick in the history of the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer program — in a span of just under 19 minutes, no less — and the Zias tied their school record for goals in a match with a 7-1 rout of University of the Southwest on Tuesday.
ENMU (1-1) broke a 1-1 tie with a goal by freshman midfielder Desiree Dominguez about eight minutes into the second half and took off from there.
Rush scored at the 63:39 mark, then added another goal just over two minutes later and a third in the with 82:29 elapsed, making it 6-1.
ENMU dominated the Lady Mustangs (0-3) in shots 49-2 — the second-highest total in the program’s history — and shots on goal 21-1. Britney Wells gave USW a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
Men’s soccer team falls — At Lubbock, Tristan Long scored in the 84th minute Tuesday to lift Lubbock Christian to a 1-0 men’s soccer victory over Eastern New Mexico University.
Long, from Frankfurt, Germany, was just beyond the 18-yard box on the left side when he received a pass from defender Tony Valera. His shot slipped past ENMU goalkeeper Orlando Rodrigurez, who was playing the near post, with 6:01 left in the match.
The Greyhounds (2-1) outshot the Chaparrals 14-7, including 10-4 in the first half, but LCU (3-0-1) had a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Chaps goalkeeper Alistair Caldwell recorded his second shutout of the season.
The Hounds’ best scoring chance came in the first half, but defender Aaron Tiemann made a sliding save after the ball got past Caldwell.
Junior forward Emerson Rodrigues had six of ENMU’s 14 shots, including one off the left post early in the second half.
Volleyball team beats OPSU — At Goodwell, Okla., junior middle blocker had 13 kills and sophomore outside hitter Amber Durand had 12 kills and 10 digs as ENMU improved to 2-3 with a 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State.
After controlling most of the first set, the Zias saw an 18-14 lead slip away in the second game when the Lady Aggies (2-5) broke a 23-23 tie on a kill by Kala Belson and an ace by Hillary Isleifson. ENMU then led most of the way in the third and fourth games but had to hold on late, with Jessica King nailing down both sets with kills.
