Legislature may see ‘dramatic’ facelift in 2013

Tuesday was the official filing day for New Mexico’s primary election. Political blogger Joe Monahan tells us the state Legislature is “poised for its most dramatic facelift in two decades.” He also reports the lawmaking game is not as much fun as it used to be and writes: “The bull market days of an overflowing […]

Their view: Agricultural producers deserve recognition

The New Mexico Farm Service Agency issued this press release in celebration of National Ag Day.

My turn: Pioneers journey inspires awe

I have followed the progress this week of a couple of 21st century-pioneers, my cousin and her husband, who are relocating to our area from 1,200 miles away. My cousin and I share the same set of grandparents, a hardy couple who came to Roosevelt County 97 years ago. It is impossible to not compare […]

Club notes —

Fairfield club The Fairfield club met Feb. 24 at Cheyenne Meadows with 10 members present for a pot luck luncheon. My turn: Facebook is modern day scrapbook

I love social networking … knowing that my neighbors are baking bread, my friends are celebrating birthdays, or my cousins are off to the zoo. When I was a child, Mrs. Frances Christo provided Portales with just such snippets of information in her News-Tribune column.

My turn: Spent after holiday

51afdb54ab84d.jpg

Do people actually celebrate Presidents Day? Or do they just take advantage of the weekend sales and that extra day off to take a family trip or just sleep in? I saw all these holiday-related articles about the history of Presidents Day online and I didn’t even bother to read them beyond the headline. So […]

In search of ponies: Losing pets eventual

It was a normal, insignificant day, the kind of day where the sight of grown man covering his face with his hands, shoulders heaving, was not what I expected as I rounded the corner. It was a scene especially surprising because I was accustomed to his smiling face and cheerful greetings as I passed his […]

McGee: Waiting in line can be enlightening

I had to stand in line the other day. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with standing in line, I get into the Zen of it: If I am to stand in line, I will stand in line. In my younger years I would’ve been fuming. Over time I’ve learned various ways to […]

McGee: Faded denim not enough to get hot dates

I ran across an article the other day that told of the clothing industry shying away from buying denim things that had been sandblasted. Sandblasting gives that “worn look” that some folks like when they buy jeans. It seems workers doing the job were destroying their lungs by breathing the fine silica in the air. […]

My turn: Portales full of hidden gems

51afdc176e69b.jpg

Christina Calloway I disagree with people who think their birthday is just another day. Birthdays have no rules. Your birthday isn’t the only day out of the year that you can treat yourself but it is nice to acknowledge just how special you are and do what you want for a day. I turned 23 […]

My turn: ENMU QB had golden arm

By David Stevens: Editor We could argue all day about who’s the greatest football player with ties to our region. That conversation would certainly include pros Zach Thomas, Donny Anderson, Lawrence McCutcheon, Jerry Sisemore, Mercury Morris, Hank Baskett, Michael Sinclair, Kenny King and at least a half dozen more. But don’t forget an Eastern New […]
