Dec. 1, 1942: The Portales Daily News: C.F. Tivis, who left for the Army only two months ago, was learning to save money. This week he sent home $75 worth of bonds and $5 for a Christmas present for his mother. He had learned to barber on the side and was earning a little money.

Local 14-year-old polio victim Buster Wooten won the 4-H Cotton Production Contest, earning the title of “Roosevelt County Cotton Prince” and $75 cash after he successfully planted and harvested an acre of cotton on his father’s farm northwest of Portales. From his labors, he earned a gross of $266.86 and a net of $194.96.
